AEO explained, without the jargon

What is Answer Engine Optimisation?

AEO is the practice of making information easier for search engines and AI-powered systems to find, understand and use when answering people's questions.

Rather than focusing solely on where a webpage appears in search results, AEO considers whether the information on that page can contribute to a useful, accurate answer. That changes how we should think about website content.

A traditional service page might focus on persuading someone that a company is experienced, reliable and professional. An answer-ready page goes further. It explains what the service involves, who it is suitable for, what choices customers face and what they need to know before making a decision.

The aim isn't simply to be mentioned by AI. It's to publish information worth using.

SEO, AEO and GEO; what's the difference?

These terms overlap, but each provides a useful way to think about digital visibility.

TermWhat it asksWhat it focuses on
SEO
Search Engine Optimisation
Can people find your website through search?Technical accessibility, relevant content, site quality, authority.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimisation
Can your content help answer the question?Clear explanations, direct answers, structure, accuracy, supporting evidence.
GEO
Generative Engine Optimisation
How is your information represented in AI-generated discovery?Whether AI can discover, understand, describe, cite or recommend you.

These are overlapping approaches, not three completely separate sets of rules. The terminology is still evolving, and different organisations use AEO and GEO in different ways.

What does good AEO content look like?

Imagine a customer asks:

"Do I need planning permission for a roof lantern?"

A weak page might say: "We offer beautiful roof lanterns designed to enhance any property. Contact our friendly team for advice." That sentence doesn't answer the question. It just advertises.

A stronger answer explains that planning permission depends on the property, the proposed work and applicable rules; identifies the relevant considerations; points to official guidance; and makes clear when professional advice may be necessary.

The second approach is more useful because it addresses the actual question rather than avoiding it. It also creates an opportunity to demonstrate expertise through accurate, practical information.

The five foundations of answer-ready content

  1. Direct. Answer the question without making readers search through paragraphs of marketing copy.
  2. Clear. Use straightforward language, descriptive headings and explanations that make sense on their own.
  3. Specific. Include meaningful details, examples, conditions and distinctions rather than generic claims.
  4. Credible. Support important statements with relevant evidence, expertise or reliable sources.
  5. Current. Review information that changes, particularly prices, regulations, product details and industry guidance.
The takeaway. AEO isn't about finding the right words to impress an algorithm. It's about giving people better answers, and making those answers easier for machines to interpret and use. No technique guarantees that an AI system will quote, cite or recommend your content. But improving clarity, accuracy and usefulness is a worthwhile starting point.
