AEO vs GEO vs SEO

Three terms, one evolving discipline. Here is what each actually focuses on, where they overlap, and when each one matters.

The classic
SEO
Search Engine Optimisation
  • Gets your pages onto Google and Bing results pages
  • Shows users 10+ options; they choose
  • Keywords, backlinks, page speed
  • Still useful; Google now skips to AI answers for many searches
Where you need to be
AEO
Answer Engine Optimisation
  • Content that can be used inside an AI-generated answer
  • Clear explanations, direct answers, useful structure
  • Accuracy and supporting evidence
  • The craft of being answer-ready, not just rankable
Same thing, newer term
GEO
Generative Engine Optimisation
  • How AI "generates" its answers from training + live crawling
  • Newer term used by developers and academics
  • Overlaps 80%+ with AEO
  • If you are doing one, you are doing both

So which one should you actually care about?

Honestly: the terminology is still shaking out. Different organisations use AEO and GEO in different ways. Some use the terms interchangeably, others distinguish between them. There is no official standard yet.

The useful mental model:

When each matters

If your goal is to...Focus on
Rank on Google results pagesSEO
Be used as a reliable source in AI answersAEO
Be discoverable and accurately represented across many AI systemsGEO
Capture a specific customer question your competitors haven't answeredAEO + content craft
The honest answer. Most small businesses don't need to agonise over the distinction. Write content that answers real customer questions, with clear structure, accurate detail and credible supporting evidence. That satisfies all three.

What all three agree on

  1. Content needs to answer the actual question, not avoid it.
  2. Structure matters. Headings describing the sections beneath them, direct openings, logical order.
  3. Accuracy and currency matter. Outdated or wrong information undermines trust everywhere.
  4. Evidence beats confidence. Claims that can be verified beat claims that are just stated.
  5. No single technique guarantees citation or recommendation by any search or AI system.
